A Tenderfoot Bride: Tales from an Old Ranch
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Nebraska Pr (October, 1988)
Author: Clarice E. Richards
Average review score:

Eastern Lady Goes West
What a wonderful look at the 1900's wild west in Elbert county Colorado.

She was the brid of a minister and these two cultured souls moved west. They witnessed the ebb tide of the wild lawless days.

This book was first published in 1920 and was praised then for its charm and accuracy. Both qualities are still quite evident today.

Vermont Lady goes West
Clarice Richased went as a bride to a ranch on the high plains of Colorado. She set herself to become a good ranch wise. She writes with a great deal of insight and humor during her coming of age and the passing of an era - the old wild west.

Then and Now: Or, Thirty-Six Years in the Rockies
Published in Paperback by Two Bears Press (June, 2003)
Authors: Robert Vaughan and Dave Walter
Average review score:

My Great-grandfather's book
This book was originally written by my Great-grandfather, Robert Vaughn, who came to this country from Wales. He wrote the book for his daughter, Arvonia Elizabeth Vaughn Sprague. The original book is extremely interesting, as it gives a very graphic view of what life was like in Montana during the latter part of the 1800s. I am intentionally spelling Vaughn this way because it was altered when he was getting a title for some land that he purchased. In Robert Vaughn's original book, the spelling of his name is the same throughout the book. I have not read Walter's reprint of Robert Vaughn's book, but the incorrect spelling of Vaughn's name and the fact that none of the descendents of Robert Vaughn were ever consulted about this book raises concerns about the accuracy of this book. My rating reflects the quality of the original book.

With the Indians in the Rockies--Great Book
First read it in the 6th grade and almost every year for the past 30 years. Love this book-a classic.

This book is one of my best childhood memories
This book is about the experiences of a white boy and an Indian boy who are trapped in the Rockies during the winter. It was written in 1912 and is said to be a true story as told to the author, who in the 1870s lived among the Black foot tribe. Full of adventure, it is also a moving story of cooperation by members of two different cultures, and the friendship that develops between them. I would highly recommend it to parents. I read this book in elementary school and for over 20 years, I could recall scenes from the book, but was unsure of the title. When I moved back to my home town, I searched the local schools for it, without success. I had told my family about this on many occasions and recently my mother found it in her attic. She had bought it at a school book sale years ago and it had been sitting in a box since then. She surprised my on my birthday with it and it was great to read and see how my memory compared with what was actually written.

Yellowstone to Yukon
Published in Paperback by National Geographic (June, 2000)
Author: Douglas H. Chadwick
Average review score:

America the Beautiful
Rediscover what makes North America such a beautiful continent. The photographs are in typical National Geographic excellence, as is the writing. I had the pleasure of meeting Douglas Chadwick in person and having dinner with him one day. This is not just someone doing a writing assignment, but someone who is very passionate about nature and its beauty. A wonderful gift for anyone you know who hikes or even drives around the country. Explore the splendors that Mother Nature has created.

Visually Stunning (educational, too)
As you would expect from N.G., the photos in this volume are breathtaking. A bonus comes in the pithy text. The author outlines the features of the Yellowstone to Yukon greater ecosystem and touches on the many issues surrounding efforts to conserve this area as a wildlife corridor. A fascinating topic masterfully covered.

Account of an expedition from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains, under the command of Major Stephen H. Long, from the notes of Major Long, Mr. T. Say, and other gentlemen of the exploring party
Published in Unknown Binding by Imprint Society ()
Author: Edwin James
Average review score:

Grand!
This book depicts the many hardships and sacrifices of early American western exploration from Stephen Long and his associates during their 1819-1820 expedition to the Rocky Mountains. Although heavily criticized at the time for not completely fullfilling their expectations, the overall information gathered was considerable. From geography, botany, zoology and geology, to Indian customs and cultures, their individual scientific publications speak for themselves. This is not a book about hostile Indian battles, numerous attacks by grizzlies, etc. which are somewhat expected of journals and narratives of this era. Rather, this is how these men described the various landforms, animals, plants and Native Americans that they encountered while suffering from thirst, hunger, fatigue, fever and climate. It is truly an engrossing book and the writing is very descriptive of how the American west was before westward expansion set in.

Comprehensive guide book
This guide book gives a good review of all the major mountain biking trails in Southern Alberta. The maps are good and there are entertaining photos throughout of some vintage mountain bikers.

The difficulty ratings are quite realistic, in my opinion.
